Wave Loads on an Offshore Oil Terminal in Shallow Water
The present paper describes model tests and calculations made of global horizontal forces and overturning moment caused by waves on a cylindrical structure (oil loading terminal). The cylindrical gravity base storage tank with loading facilities for shuttle tankers in shallow water had a diameter of 100 m and a height of 60 m. The water depth was assumed to be 25 m. Model tests were done at a scale of 1:120 in a 40 m long and 5 m wide wave flume. The wave characteristics used in the study was based on existing wave data from the Pechora Sea in the Eastern Barents Sea. Assuming a design sea state (recurrence period 100 years) with significant wave height of 8.5 m and peak period 12 s, the design force was estimated to about 300 MN according to MacCamy and Fuchs theory. By using statistics obtained from the model tests, the design force may vary from 180 to 430 MN, depending on the design sea state assumed and probability level of exceedance chosen. Similarly, the design overturning moment may vary from 2900 MNm to 7200 MNm. The uncertainty in the model tests is estimated to about 5 %.
