Unblocking freight in southeast Europe

The role of effective border crossings in the Western Balkans in developing rail freight corridors between increasingly busy traffic hubs in southeast Europe and northern destinations has been analyzed by a European Union (EU)-backed research program. It remains a significant challenge for policy makers to connect the countries of southeast Europe effectively into the European Commission's trans-European transport network (TEN-T). Because of the need to integrate the railways of the Western Balkans, the TEN-T vision faces a particular challenge. Rising patterns of consumption and emerging trade routes make it clear that significant potential exists for rail freight expansion.
