The Relationship between Number of Passing Events and Operating Parameters in Mixed Bicycle Traffic: Case Study of Nanjing

As the electric bicycles develop rapidly in China, the traditional non-motorized traffic flow consisting of only bicycles has transferred to a mixed traffic flow. Due to the higher speed of electric bicycles, the phenomenon electric bicycles pass the conventional bicycles can be usually seen. Besides, an electric bicycle often overtakes other electric bicycles. The primary objective of this paper is to investigate the two types of passing events and explore the relationship between passing events and traffic parameters in designated bicycle facilities. 3 exclusive bicycle paths in China were observed with cameras. Several experiences about the camera survey were concluded. Then the field data was analyzed in detail including vehicle number, velocity characteristics and passing events features. Through data analysis and fitting, the authors found the rise of speed difference would not increase the passing event number necessarily, so would the volume and density. The data fitting implies the quadratic function can describe better the relationship between passing event number and bicycle volume (and density) in narrow lanes while linear function dose better in wider ones. The conclusions of this study can be applied to estimate the passing events in bicycle mixed traffic and supply the methods of passing events in Highway Capacity Manual 2010.
