Survey on the Uniformity of Seaborne Cargo Conventions: Need to Limit the Scope of Uniformity
A survey targeting maritime professionals in China and Europe, particularly the United Kingdom, was conducted in order to evaluate their comprehension of the Rotterdam Rules. Despite the attempts of the United Nations to bring uniformity through the adoption and application of a revised and updated sea cargo convention, there is diversity in the understanding of key elements of the Rules, which jeopardizes widespread ratification. Research methods and design of the questionnaire are explained. Statistical evidence from the survey, which supplements and updates the 1995 World Trade Organization questionnaire, is presented. Finally, limitations of the survey and recommendations for future research are discussed.
