Indonesian railway in the clouds: developing a new railway at 2,500 metres above sea level
PT Freeport operates one of the world’s largest copper and gold mines in West Papua, Indonesia. They are developing a railway system as the mining operation transitions from open cut to underground. This paper provides an overview on the mining operations and transport task, together with the rail infrastructure design, rollingstock procurement and challenges involved in establishing a new railway system in a remote area.
