Accompanying the Development of Road-based Cooperative Systems: Ergonomics Analysis to Construct a Roadmap for User Testing

Road-based cooperative systems are based on a principle of local transmissions between vehicles and elements of the infrastructure located within the same geographical perimeter (V2V, V2I). Contents of various kinds aim to inform drivers to assist them in making decisions regarding how to manage vehicle dynamics as well as to adapt their journey to local conditions. The possibility of occasionally transferring the driving task to the vehicle is also being considered. This contribution was produced as part of the first ever French FOT, Score@F, dedicated to confronting these systems to the public. It took place in the early stages of the project, in order to propose a roadmap of issues to submit to formal inquiry before launching these new intelligent systems. The methodology relies on analyzing system functionalities in order to define axes for user evaluation. Based on a critical confrontation with a classical model of information transfer, the authors identify three functional dimensions defining these systems. These allow the authors to categorize road-based cooperative systems as information broadcast systems melding two worlds together: that of assistance, and that of navigation.
