Activity demand modelling case study: Dubai multimodal transport model

The activity-based model is a derivative of a traditional four stage transport model. Unlike the four-step approach, which is based on single trips the activity demand modelling is based on tours of travel or human activity behaviour. Currently the use of advanced modelling based on travel behaviour is growing. Several cities or metropolitan areas around the world have used or are developing the advanced travel models. The activity based models can provide a better representation of human travel behaviour and are more appropriate for modelling and testing policy scenarios. The purpose of this paper is to provide the basic concept of the activity demand modelling as a new generation of transport modelling and document the advantages and disadvantages of this type of models. As a case study application of activity demand modelling for Dubai as a fast growing city in United Arab Emirates (UAE) will be discussed. This paper also provides useful information on the available transport planning packages worldwide that are used for activity demand modelling.
