Transit-Oriented Communities: A literature review on the relationship between the built environment and transit ridership
This literature review examines factors in the built environment that can encourage public transit use. Six key factors were identified: (1) Destinations; (2) Distance to transit, (3) Density: residential and employment; (4) Diversity: mixed land use and housing; (5) Design: urban design, transit facilities, street connectivity, and pedestrian networks; and (6) Demand Management: trip costs and parking. Other factors affecting ridership are noted including: car ownership levels, demographics, transit supply, and climate.
