Using Modeling Tools for Highway Control Operations
With highways/roadways getting crowded year over year, more sophisticated traffic management systems are required to keep the roadways safe and less congested. Also with high demand on bandwidths for many of the critical Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) applications that require video, along with voice and data, wireless networks need to be designed to handle the video and data traffic as well as applications. A key challenge when designing such an Intelligent Transportation System is to ensure that the system once built will meet the expected operational requirements. The operations scenario using these applications can be modeled using a Model Based Systems Engineering approach (MBSE) with a Systems Modeling Language (SysML) tool. In this Use case driven approach, the operator requirements for the system is first defined systematically. Next it will be described in a generic way without having to determine the architectural implementation. The last step will be the investigation of the technological implementation options. The Model Based Systems Engineering approach presented in this paper avoids making early and potentially sub-optimal implementation decisions before functional and system requirements are completely understood and described. The result is a considerable risk reduction and quality improvement in the design process. The focus area in this paper is the Wireless Telecommunication network which is part of an Intelligent Highway Control System (IHCS). The implementation choice considered in the Design phase is Long Term Evolution (LTE), which is a fourth generation Wireless technology. Dimensioning parameters of the LTE network will be linked to the overall system through Parametric Diagrams within the SysML model. The paper ends with a discussion on suitability of Model Based Systems Engineering for mission critical Telecom networks.
