RELIABILITY OF THE INTERPRETATION OF SOILS FROM AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHS IN HIGHWAY PLANNING PRACTICE
THE RELIABILITY OF A METHOD OF SOIL INTERPRETATION FROM AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHS DEVELOPED FOR THE SWEDISH ROAD ADMINISTRATION WAS CHECKED BY USING THREE DIFFERENT CATEGORIES OF INTERPRETERS. DETERMINATIONS OF SOIL TYPES SHOW VERY GOOD RESULTS IN REGARD TO SANDY, SILTY MORAINE AND COARSE SEDIMENTS. THE INTERPRETATION OF CLAY AREAS GIVES A RATHER LARGE DISPERSION BETWEEN THE GROUPS. THE ANALYSIS OF THE INTERPRETATION OF BOUNDARIES SHOWS THAT THE BROUNDARIES BETWEEN OUTCROPS AND MORAINE OR COARSE SEDIMENTS ARE DIFFICULT TO IDENTIFY. ALL OTHER TYPES OF BOUNDARIES WITHIN THE AREA SUCH AS ROCK/CLAY, FRICTION SOIL/CLAY, FRICTION SOIL/ORGANIC SOIL AND CLAY/ORGANIC SOIL WERE QUITE EASY TO INTERPRET. /DOT/
