LABORATORY AND IN-SITU EXPERIMENTS ON THE PROBLEM OF IMMEDIATE OPENING OF SOIL-CEMENT BASE TO GENERAL TRAFFIC

THIS PAPER DISCUSSES THE POSSIBILITY OF ACCELERATING ROAD CONSTRUCTION BY OMITTING A WEEK'S REGULAR CURING AND OPENING THE SOIL-CEMENT BASE TO TRAFFIC DIRECTLY AFTER COMPACTION. ITS PARTICULAR APPLICATION IS TO THE IMPROVEMENT OF SHIMABARA ROAD BY THE JAPANESE PUBLIC HIGHWAY CORP. THIS STUDY INCLUDES LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS ON SAMPLES AS WELL AS IN-SITU BASE TESTS UNDER ACTUAL TRAFFIC. THE PRACTICABILITY OF THE METHOD UNDER CERTAIN CONDITIONS HAS BEEN PROVED. APPROXIMATELY 100,000 SQ. M. OF SOIL-CEMENT BASE WITH 4.5% PORTLAND CEMENT FOR THE MAJOR WORK OF SHIMABARA TURNPIKE WAS STARTED AND COMPLETED AS AN ASPHALT CONCRETE PAVEMENT ROAD IN AUG. 1960 WITH IMMEDIATE TRAFFIC RELEASE ON FINISHED BASE. NO DEFECTS ARE EVIDENT AT THE PRESENT TIME.
