A new paradigm for pedestrian-themed road safety audits

The Roads and Traffic Authority of New South Wales commissioned Parsons Brinkerhoff Australia to undertake a series of thematic road safety audits at nominated sites across the Sydney region. The nominated sites had a demonstrated pedestrian crash history for which the aim of the audit was to identify any pedestrian safety issues and factors contributing to the safety of pedestrians within the road environment. Most pedestrian crashes result from a complex mix of factors. The underlying factors contributing to pedestrian crashes include environmental factors, human factors and vehicle factors. To address the issue of pedestrian safety, a holistic study methodology was developed which expanded on the traditional road safety audit model by incorporating a baseline observational study, crash analysis and speed assessment as supportive study elements. The holistic approach adopted by the study team provided a comprehensive view of pedestrian safety in order to assess actions to mitigate specific pedestrian safety risks and to identify and implement effective remedial measures to reduce the incidence and number of pedestrian crashes and/or their severity. This paper presents the project objective, study methodology, key findings on pedestrian risks and summarises the findings of the pedestrian safety audit.
