Interstate’s Path Meets a Surprise Landfill: Innovative Technology and Interagency Cooperation Solve Dilemma in Tennessee

When the preliminary route for Interstate 69 in west Tennessee encountered previously unrecorded landfills, the state’s Department of Transportation and Department of Environment and Conservation teamed up for a rapid-response investigation and solution, using geophysical methods to characterize and assess the environmental impacts. The questions were: How can transportation professionals deal with environmental surprises and keep a project on schedule and on budget? and Are technologies available to fast-track a project past environmental roadblocks? This article gives an account of the approaches taken at one of the problem landfills. The account illustrates some practical answers to these questions.
