ADVANTAGE AND FEASIBILITY OF A HAZARD WARNING LIGHT WHICH IS DEPENDENT ON DECELERATION AND A TWO-OR MULTISTAGE BRAKE LIGHT

THE HAZARD WARNING LIGHT SPECIFIED IN THE GERMAN HIGHWAY CODE IS OPERATED MANUALLY. POSSIBLE ADVANTAGES OF AUTOMATIC CONTROL OF THE LIGHT WERE STUDIED BY A MULTI-DISCIPLINARY TEAM, AND IT WAS CONCLUDED THAT AUTOMATIC OPERATION COULD ELIMINATE SOME OF THE DEFICIENCIES IN THE PRESENT SYSTEM. SIX DECLERATION- RELATED CONTROL SWITCHES WERE TESTED, TWO OF WHICH FULFILLED ALL DEMANDS MADE UPON THEM. BASED ON THE RESULTS OBTAINED IN THE STUDY, THE INVESTIGATIONS RECOMMEND THE INTRODUCTION OF OBLIGATORY ADDITIONAL AUTOMATIC CONTROL WHICH MUST FULFILL CERTAIN REQUIREMENTS. THE SECOND PART OF THE STUDY EXAMINES THE POSSIBLE ADVANTAGES OF A TWO-OR MULTISTAGE BRAKE LIGHT. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT MORE RESEARCH NEEDS TO BE CARRIED OUT BEFORE A DECISION CAN BE TAKEN AS TO THE EFFICIENCY AND DESIREABILITY OF THIS SYSTEM. /TRRL/
