Multipurpose lanes - an opportunity of cycle transport in the Czech Republic

Viceucelove pruhy - sance pro cyklistickou dopravu v CR

The alignment of cycle tracks outside carriageways, mostly combined with pedestrians walking, was consider as an ideal solution for long time periods. However, weak points of those ideas, such as uneasy construction, high costs, worse travel comfort for cyclists and conflicts with pedestrians and cars at crossings appeared very soon. ln the Czech Republic, as well as in many EU countries (the Netherlands, France, Germany, Austria, etc.) the interest in cycle lanes lead in main traffic areas has increased. This solution seems to be hopeful because multipurpose lanes can be utilized. Even at modest width dimensions (7.0 m to 8.5 m) such lanes can be created. New and expensive hard or stabilized areas will not be needed, for existing areas will be utilized only by amendments of road marking. The chance of a low-cost and a short-time efficient extension of cycle infrastructure in the Czech Republic is offered.
