Roadside Equipment Architectures for DSRC-Enabled Applications Using Traffic Signal Phase and Timing Information

Wireless Roadside Equipment (RSE) installations that use Signal Phase And Timing (SPAT) information from the traffic signal controllers at signalized intersections and receive location information from vehicles can be used to enable a variety of safety, mobility and environmental applications. This paper describes a taxonomy of applications based on their information requirements, as well as implications for hardware and software RSE design and deployment in support of these applications, based on the authors’ experience with testbed installations and existing 5.9 GHz Dedicated Short Range Communication (DSRC) prototype hardware.
