Abstract: This research aims to analyze the most recent approaches and studies about the inventory management in the supply chain, and how these consider the transportation into mathematical models in order to the sourcing policy establishment. Under the new paradigm of supply chain management, the coordination of logistics processes between the different company's departments or firms have received considerable attention in the last years both in the practice as well as the research. This study for the inventory coordination has been focused on different analysis instances: i) between tiers of the supply chain (e.g. suppliers-manufacturer, manufacturer-distributor, and distributor-retailer), that means between vendors and buyers; ii) between work areas (e.g. sourcing-production, production-distribution); and iii) between logistics functional activities (purchase-production, production-inventory, production-transportation, and inventory-transportation). It exhibits an assessment about several studies which meet the coordination instances mentioned previously. As result of this analysis, the most used coordination strategies and the recently mathematical models developed are identified for the coordinated inventory control between vendors and buyers. Finally, by detecting the gaps or future research lines in this important topic, it concludes that there are some variants that have not been explored still. Included tables, figures and conclusions.
