The Dawning of a New Era: A look at China’s Transportation future.evolution

This article describes China’s transportation future, as the country’s residents rapidly migrate from rural areas in the country to rapidly growing cities. It focuses on mass transit, bus rapid transit (BRT), and rail. A short sidebar examines China’s boom in privately owned vehicles. The Chinese government plans to increase mass transit use to 60 percent in its largest cities—those over 10 million people; to 40 percent in medium-sized cities; and to 20 percent in cities with fewer than 1 million residents. The aim is also to reduce China’s ever-increasing carbon footprint. Urban centers are embracing BRT concepts and the government is promoting use of vehicles powered by non-petroleum fuels such as liquefied petroleum gas, compressed natural gas, biofuels, and electricity. The author also describes the country’s expanding rail network and its use of Maglev technology.
