THE KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF ROAD SAFETY OF 5 TO 6 YEAR OLD CHILDREN

THE FOLLOWING ENQUIRIES WERE CARRIED OUT IN THREE AREAS (LARGE CITY, MEDIUM-SIZED TOWN, RURAL AREA): (A) TEST INVESTIGATIONS ON CHILDREN, NOT YET ATTENDING SCHOOL, FROM 5 TO 6 YEARS OLD (N = 397) USING AMONGST OTHER THINGS TEST FILMS, WHICH MAINLY INVOLVED COMPLEX PEDESTRIAN SITUATIONS; (B) QUESTIONS PUT TO PARENTS (N = 1083); (C) SUPPLEMENTARY QUESTIONS PUT TO TEACHERS/LEADERS OF PRE-SCHOOL GROUPS (N = 41); (D) SYSTEMATIC OBSERVATIONS OF THE BEHAVIOUR OF CHILDREN IN ACTUAL TRAFFIC CONDITIONS (ONLY IN LARGE CITY AREAS) (N = 200) - REGARDING THEIR PARTICIPATION IN ROAD TRAFFIC IT WAS SHOWN THAT: (A) CHILDREN OF THIS AGE ARE MUCH MORE FREQUENTLY INVOLVED IN ROAD TRAFFIC THAN WAS PREVIOUSLY ASSUMED; (B) THE VISITING OF A PRE-SCHOOL ESTABLISHMENT ACCELERATES THE INCREASE IN INDEPENDENT PARTICIPATION IN ROAD TRAFFIC OF THE CHILD; (C) APPROXIMATELY ONE HALF OF ALL THE CHILDREN OF THIS AGE CAN ALREADY RIDE BICYCLES. FROM THE TEST INVESTIGATIONS IT WAS SHOWN THAT: (A) 5 TO 6-YEAR OLD PRE-SCHOOL CHILDREN ALREADY POSSESS AN ASTOUNDINGLY COMPREHENSIVE KNOWLEDGE OF ROAD TRAFFIC AND SAFETY; (B) THE CHILDREN ARE ALREADY CAPABLE OF DEALING WITH, IN A KNOWLEDGEABLE AND RISK-AVOIDING MANNER, SIMPLY STRUCTURED TRAFFIC SITUATIONS, WHICH ARE MOST FREQUENTLY MET DURING THEIR INDEPENDENT PARTICIPATION IN TRAFFIC; (C) CHILDREN EXHIBIT, ON THE OTHER HAND, DIFFICULTIES IN DEALING WITH UNUSUAL AND COMPLEX SITUATIONS (FOR EXAMPLE SIMULTANEOUS RECEPTION OF VARIOUS PIECES OF INFORMATION; BEHAVIOUR OF OTHER PEOPLE ON THE ROAD WHICH DEVIATES FROM THAT NORMALLY EXPECTED; THE APPLICATION OF SIMPLE RULES AND STRATEGIES FOR ACTION TO COMPLEX, UNKNOWN SITUATIONS). CHILDREN WITH MORE EXPERIENCE (FROM TRAFFIC-INTENSE RESIDENTIAL AREAS AND THOSE WITH GREATER SELF CONFIDENCE) PRODUCED BETTER RESULTS IN THE TESTS. FROM THE RESULTS OF THESE INVESTIGATIONS THE CONSEQUENCES OF ROAD SAFETY EDUCATION ARE DERIVED WHICH AIM AT A HIGHER STARTING STANDARD AND BETTER PARTICIPATION FROM THE PARENTS, USING VARIED (ACCORDING TO THE ENVIRONMENT) INSTRUCTION FOR THE UNDERSTANDING OF ROAD SAFETY.
