Traffic Counting at Intersections by Bluetooth-Technology
To improve traffic flow today usually traffic models are built up to represent the different interactions between cars, pedestrians, traffic signs and the environment of the road. To build up these traffic models valid input data is needed. Especially in inner-city networks with lots of intersections and various traffic relations this task is often connected with large effort. Therefore the DTV-Verkehrsconsult GmbH searched for a method to detect traffic streams and turning ratios at intersections with available techniques that are easy to handle and work reliably. A field test with Bluetooth-sensors was carried out at a typical inner-city intersection with traffic lights in Aachen, Germany. The results show that the Bluetooth-technology is an excellent method to count the turning ratios at inner-city intersections automatically and therefore offers a convenient opportunity to collect different valid data for traffic models.
